This preliminary project was the result of many meetings between the Madrid City Council and the different neighborhood associations .

Our mission as architects was to be at the service of a project that would satisfy the needs of neighbors, associations and the city council without our creative vanity hindering the process .

For this, on the one hand, it seemed important to us to keep what we learned in the six years of El Campo de Cebada in the project . Experimentation programs, citizen participation and neighborhood co-management of public spaces were themes that could coexist perfectly with the sports center program. The project not only had to comply with all the urban and sports requirements, but it had to be approved in the assemblies by the neighborhood associations. To do this, we strive to communicate each decision we were taking and to present a flexible project that could be transformed throughout the process.

The first decision was to maintain the same area of public space that existed in Campo de Cebada and divide it into two large squares . One at street level that allows access to the Sports Center and the Barley Market (a new access to the market is created from the new plaza). The other, co-managed by neighborhood residents, which is elevated above the pool and the court, and offers interesting views of the neighborhood.

The access plaza is oriented to the south, to allow the swimming pool to sunbathe and, urbanistically, to regenerate the rear area of the market that until now was most disadvantaged.

On the east façade of the La Cebada Market we will attach a piece of narrow bay with the sports spaces of the sports center: administration, changing rooms, gym and multipurpose rooms. This piece will connect with the large volume that contains the pool and the court through a large hall.
